English Translation
Sahl ibn Sa'd narrated that a man came to him and said: "So-and-so, a governor of Madinah, is summoning you tomorrow to curse 'Ali at the pulpit." Sahl asked: "What shall I say?" He said: "You say 'Abu Turab.'" Sahl laughed and said: "By Allah, no one named him that except the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). By Allah, there was no name dearer to him than that." 'Abd al-'Aziz said: My father asked: "O Abu al-'Abbas, how was that?" He said: "'Ali entered upon Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then he came out and lay down in the mosque. The Prophet (peace be upon him) entered upon Fatimah and said: 'Where is your cousin?' She said: 'He is there in the mosque.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out and found that his cloak had fallen off his back and the dust had reached his back. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began wiping the dust from his back and saying: 'Sit up, Abu Turab! Sit up, Abu Turab!' By Allah, there was no name dearer to him than that — no one named him that except the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."
