English Translation
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz asked Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathmah: Who was the first to write 'From Abdullah, Commander of the Faithful'? He said: Al-Shifa bint Abdullah, one of the early emigrant women, told me that Labid ibn Rabi'ah and Adi ibn Hatim came to Madinah and went to the mosque, where they found Amr ibn al-As. They said: 'O Ibn al-As, seek permission for us to see the Commander of the Faithful.' He said: 'By Allah, you have hit upon his name. He is the Commander (Amir) and we are the Believers (Mu'minun).' So Amr went in to Umar and said: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful.' Umar said to him: 'What is this?' He said: 'You are the Commander and we are the Believers.' And the title was used in correspondence from that day on.
