English Translation
The Prophet (peace be upon him) looked at the Angel of Death (peace be upon him) at the head of a man from the Ansar, and he said: "O Angel of Death, be gentle with my companion, for he is a believer." The Angel of Death (peace be upon him) said: "Be at ease and be comforted, and know that I am gentle with every believer. Know, O Muhammad, that I take the soul of the son of Adam, and when a member of his family screams, I stand in the house with his soul and say: 'What is this screaming? By Allah, we have not wronged him, nor have we hastened his appointed time, nor have we accelerated his destiny. We bear no fault in taking him. If you are content with what Allah has done, you will be rewarded. But if you grieve and become angry, you will sin and bear burden. You have no complaint against us, and we will return to you again and again, so beware.' There is no household, O Muhammad — whether of hair or mud, on land or sea, plain or mountain — except that I examine them every day and night, until I know their young and old better than they know themselves. By Allah, O Muhammad, if I wished to take the soul of a mosquito, I could not do so until Allah permits its taking." Ja'far said: "It reached me that he examines them at the times of prayer. When death approaches, whoever used to maintain the prayers, the angel draws near to him and repels Satan from him, and the angel prompts him to say: 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' And that is the momentous occasion."
