Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:4114 حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ثنا أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْخُزَاعِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى وَالنَّاسُ حَوْلَهُ صَلَّى صَلَاةً خَفِيفَةً تَامَّةَ الرُّكُوعِ وَالسُّجُودِ فَجَلَسَ يَوْمًا فَأَطَالَ الْجُلُوسَ حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنِ اسْكُتُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُوحَى إِلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَطَلْتَ الْجُلُوسَ حَتَّى أَوْمَأَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ أَنَّهُ يُنَزَّلُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ «لَا وَلَكِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَغْبَةٍ وَرَهْبَةٍ سَأَلْتُ اللهَ فِيهَا ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُعَذِّبَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍ عُذِّبَ بِهِ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَى عَامَّتِكُمْ عَدُوًّا يَسْتَبِيحُهَا فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ فَمَنَعَنِيهَا» قُلْتُ لَهُ أَبُوكَ سَمِعَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ سَمِعَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَدَدَ أَصَابِعِي هَذِهِ الْعَشْرِ الْأَصَابِعِ
English Translation
Nafi' ibn Khalid al-Khuza'i reported from his father: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when he prayed while people were around him, would pray a light prayer with complete bowing and prostration. One day he sat and prolonged the sitting until some of us signaled to others to be quiet, saying that revelation was being sent down to the Messenger of Allah. When he finished, some of the people said: "O Messenger of Allah, you prolonged the sitting until some of us signaled to others that revelation was being sent down to you." He said: "No, but it was a prayer of hope and fear. I asked Allah for three things in it, and He gave me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to punish you with a punishment with which those before you were punished, and I asked Him not to give power over your general population to an enemy who would wipe them out, and He granted me both. And I asked Him not to divide you into factions and make some of you taste the violence of others, but He withheld it." I asked him: "Your father heard it from the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes, I heard him say that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah as many times as these ten fingers of mine."
