English Translation
Aflah, the freed slave of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, reported that he passed by Zayd ibn Thabit and Abu Ayyub while they were sitting near the funeral mosque. One of them said to the other: "Do you remember the hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us in this very place where we are sitting?" He said: "Yes, about Madinah. I heard him saying that a time will come upon people when territories will be conquered, and men will go out to them and find comfort, abundance, and food. They will pass by their brothers who are pilgrims or performing 'umrah and say: 'What keeps you in the hardship and severity of living?'" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "One leaves and one stays" — repeating it several times — "and Madinah is better for them. No one remains in it patiently enduring its hardships until he dies except that I will be a witness or intercessor for him on the Day of Resurrection."
