English Translation
Abu Jamilah reported: When 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, al-Hasan ibn 'Ali was appointed as his successor. While he was leading the people in prayer, a man leapt upon him and stabbed him in the hip with a dagger. He was ill from it for months. Then he stood on the pulpit to address the people and said: "O people of Iraq, fear Allah regarding us, for we are your rulers and your guests. We are the People of the House about whom Allah Most High said: 'Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you with a thorough purification' (33:33)." He continued speaking that day until there was no one in the mosque who was not weeping.
