English Translation
Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf informed Umar while he was on the way to Syria, when he learned of the plague there, of what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'This illness or epidemic is a punishment with which those before you were punished. If it is in a land where you are not, do not go to it. If it is in a land where you are, do not leave fleeing from it.' So Umar turned back with the people that year.
