English Translation
Abu Qirsafah said: The beginning of my Islam was that I was an orphan raised between my mother and my maternal aunt. I inclined more toward my aunt. I used to tend a few sheep. My aunt would often say to me: "O my son, do not pass by this man" — meaning the Prophet (peace be upon him) — "lest he lead you astray." But I would go out to the pasture, leave my sheep, and go to the Prophet (peace be upon him), staying with him listening to him. Then I would return with my sheep thin and dry-uddered. My aunt said: "Why are your sheep dry-uddered?" I said: "I do not know." On the second day, I did the same. I heard him say: "O people, emigrate and hold fast to Islam, for emigration does not cease as long as jihad continues." I returned with my sheep as before. On the third day, I stayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) listening to him until I accepted Islam, pledged allegiance, and shook his hand. I complained to him about my aunt and my sheep. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Bring me the sheep." I brought them, and he rubbed their backs and udders and supplicated for blessing in them. They became full of fat and milk. When I entered upon my aunt with them, she said: "O my son, graze like this from now on!" I said: "O aunt, I only grazed where I graze every day, but let me tell you my story." I told her the story of my visiting the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed her of his conduct and words. My mother and my aunt said: "Take us to him." I went with my mother and my aunt, and they accepted Islam and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — without shaking hands. This is the story of Abu Qirsafah's Islam and his emigration to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Ziyad said: "Abu Qirsafah used to dwell in the land of Tihamah."
