English Translation
Abu Dharr said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, advise me." He said: "I advise you to fear Allah, for it is the foundation of your affair." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me more." He said: "You must recite the Quran and remember Allah, for that will be a light for you in the heavens and a light on the earth." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "Do not laugh excessively, for it kills the heart and removes the light of the face." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "You must strive in jihad, for it is the monasticism of my nation." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "You must remain silent except for good, for it repels Satan from you and aids you in your religious affairs." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for it is more likely that you will not belittle the blessings of Allah upon you." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "Maintain ties with your relatives even if they cut you off." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "Do not fear the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah." I said, "Tell me more." He said: "Love for people what you love for yourself." Then he struck my chest with his hand and said: "O Abu Dharr, there is no intellect like planning, no piety like restraint, and no nobility like good character."
