Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:1317 حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ ذُكِرَ الْكِبْرُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَشَدَّدَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي لَأَغْسِلُ ثِيَابِي فَيُعْجِبُنِي بَيَاضُها وَيُعْجِبُنِي شِرَاكُ نَعْلِي وعَلَاقَةُ سَوْطِي فَقَالَ «لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ الْكِبْرَ إِنَّمَا الْكِبْرُ أَنْ تُسَفِّهَ الْحَقَّ وتَغْمِصَ النَّاسَ»
English Translation
Arrogance was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he spoke sternly about it, saying: "Indeed Allah does not love every self-conceited boaster." A man from the gathering said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I wash my clothes and I am pleased by their whiteness, and I am pleased by the strap of my sandal and the loop of my whip." He said: "That is not arrogance. Rather, arrogance is to reject the truth and to look down upon people."
