English Translation
Ibn Abbas narrated: Ali ibn Abi Talib said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the Quran slips away from my chest.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Shall I teach you words by which Allah will benefit you and benefit those whom you teach?' He said: 'Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.' He said: 'Pray four rak'ahs on Friday night, reciting in the first rak'ah al-Fatihah and Ya-Sin, in the second al-Fatihah and Ha-Mim al-Dukhan, in the third al-Fatihah and Alif-Lam-Mim al-Sajdah, and in the fourth al-Fatihah and Tabarak al-Mufassal. When you finish the tashahhud, praise Allah and extol Him, send blessings upon the Prophets, and seek forgiveness for the believers. Then say: O Allah, have mercy on me by helping me abandon sins for as long as You keep me alive, have mercy on me from burdening myself with what does not concern me, and grant me good insight into what pleases You. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty and Honor and might that cannot be challenged, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your Majesty and the light of Your Face, to make my heart cling to the love of Your Book as You have taught me, and grant me the ability to recite it in the manner that pleases You. I ask You to illuminate my sight with the Book, to free my tongue with it, to relieve my heart with it, to expand my chest with it, to employ my body with it, and to strengthen me upon it and help me with it. For none helps me upon goodness except You and none grants success in it except You. Do this for three Fridays, or five, or seven, and you will memorize it by the permission of Allah. It never failed a believer.' Ali came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after seven Fridays and informed him of his memorization of the Quran and hadith. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'A believer, by the Lord of the Kaaba! Teach, O Abu Hasan, teach, O Abu Hasan.'
