Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:11697a حَدَّثَنَا جبرونُ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ عَنْ حُصَيْنِ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَفِي يَدِهِ قِطْعَةٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَقَالَ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ «مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ قَائِلًا لِرَبِّهِ لَوْ مَاتَ وَهَذِهِ عِنْدَهُ؟» فَقَسَمَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُومَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّ لِأَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ مِثْلَ هَذَا الْجَبَلِ» وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى أُحُدٍ «ذَهَبًا وَفِضَّةً فَيُنْفِقُها فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَيَتْرُكَ مِنْهَا دِينَارًا»
English Translation
Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out to his companions one day with a piece of gold in his hand and said to Abdullah ibn Umar: 'What would Muhammad say to his Lord if he died while this was in his possession?' He distributed it before he got up, then said: 'It would not please me that the companions of Muhammad had gold and silver like this mountain' — and he pointed to Uhud — 'which they spent in the path of Allah but left behind even a single dinar.'
