Narrated by'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith

English Translation

Narrated 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith: Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith and 'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both) gathered together and said: By Allah, let us send these two boys (that is, me and al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas) to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and let them go and request that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) appoint them as collectors of zakat, so that they may deliver to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as others deliver, and receive something as others receive. While this conversation was going on, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came and stood near them, and they mentioned this to 'Ali. 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not send them, for by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will not do this (for he knew that zakat is forbidden to the family of the Prophet). So Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith began to speak ill of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: By Allah, you do this to us out of envy. By Allah, we do not envy you the honour of being the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that you have attained. Then 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Very well, send the two of them. So we two went, and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) lay down. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had finished the Zuhr prayer, we two hurried to the chamber and reached it before him, and stood by the chamber until he (peace be upon him) came and took hold of our ears (this was his affection and playfulness, for boys are pleased by such things) and said: "Bring out what you are hiding in your hearts." Then he (peace be upon him) entered the chamber and so did we, and that day he (peace be upon him) was with the Mother of the Believers Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her). Then we said to one another: You speak. So one of us said: O Messenger of Allah, you are the most kind in maintaining ties of kinship and the most generous to relatives, and we have reached the age of marriage. We have come so that you may appoint us over these zakat funds, that we may bring in the collections to you as others do, and that we too may receive something as others receive (so that the expenses of our marriage may be met). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent for a long while, until we wished to speak again, and the Mother of the Believers Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) was signalling to us from behind the curtain not to say anything more. Then he (peace be upon him) said: "Zakat is not fitting for the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him); it is but the dirt of the people." (Perhaps the saying that money is the dirt of the hands comes from here.) Then he said: "Call Mahmiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) — this was the name of his treasurer, who was appointed over the khumus — and Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib to me." The narrator said: So the two of them came, and he (peace be upon him) said to Mahmiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Marry your daughter to this boy, al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas." So he married his daughter to him. And he said to Nawfal ibn al-Harith: "Marry your daughter to this boy" (that is, to 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah, the narrator of the hadith). So he gave his daughter to me in marriage. And he said to Mahmiyah: "Pay from the khumus their dowries, such and such an amount." Urdu Translation

عبدالمطلب بن ربیعہ بن حارث کہتے ہیں کہربیعہ رضی اللہ عنہ بن حارث اور عباس رضی اللہ عنہ بن عبدالمطلب دونوں جمع ہوئے اور کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم ہم ان دونوں لڑکوں (یعنی مجھے اور فضل بن عباس) کو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس بھیج دیں، اور یہ دونوں جا کر عرض کریں کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمان کو زکوٰۃ پر تحصیلدار بنا دیں۔ اور یہ دونوں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو لا کر ادا کر دیں جیسے اور لوگ ادا کرتے ہیں اور ان کو کچھ مل جائے جیسے اور لوگوں کو ملتا ہے۔ غرض یہ گفتگو ہو رہی تھی کہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ بن ابی طالب بھی آ کر ان کے پاس کھڑے ہو گئے تو ان دونوں نے سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ سے اس کا ذکر کیا۔ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ انہیں مت بھیجو، کہ اللہ کی قسم! رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمایسا نہیں کریں گے۔ (اس لئے کہ آپ کو معلوم تھا کہ زکوٰۃ سیدوں کو حرام ہے) پس ربیعہ بن حارث سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو برا کہنے لگے اور کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم تم ہمارے ساتھ حسد سے ایسا کرتے ہو۔ اور اللہ کی قسم کہ تم نے جو شرف رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی دامادی کا پایا ہے تو اس کا ہم تو تم سے کچھ حسد نہیں کرتے۔ تب سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اچھا ان دونوں کو بھیج دو۔ تو ہم دونوں گئے اور سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ لیٹ رہے۔ پھر جب رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمظہر کی نماز پڑھ چکے تو ہم دونوں جلدی سے حجرے میں آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے پہلے جا پہنچے اور حجرے کے پاس کھڑے ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمتشریف لائے اور ہم دونوں کے کان پکڑے (یہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی شفقت اور ملاعبت تھی کہ لڑکے اس سے خوش ہوتے ہیں) اور فرمایا کہ ظاہر کرو جو تم دل میں چھپا کر لائے ہو۔ پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمبھی حجرے میں گئے اور ہم بھی، اور اس دن آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمام المؤمنین زینب رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس تھے۔ پھر ایک دوسرے سے کہنے لگے کہ تم بیان کرو۔ غرض ایک نے عرض کیا کہ یا رسول اللہ! آپ سب سے زیادہ صلہ رحمی کرنے والے اور قرابت داروں سے سب سے زیادہ احسان کرنے والے ہیں، اور ہم نکاح (کی عمر) کو پہنچ گئے ہیں۔ پھر ہم اس لئے حاضر ہوئے ہیں کہ آپ ہمیں ان زکوٰتوں پر عامل بنا دیں کہ ہم بھی آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو تحصیل لا دیں جیسے اور لوگ لاتے ہیں اور ہمیں بھی کچھ مل جائے جیسے اوروں کو مل جاتا ہے۔ (تاکہ ہمارے نکاح کا خرچ نکل آئے) پھر رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمبڑی دیر تک چپ ہو رہے یہاں تک کہ ہم نے چاہا کہ پھر کچھ کہیں، اور ام المؤمنین زینب رضی اللہ عنہا ہم سے پردہ کی آڑ سے اشارہ فرماتی تھیں کہ اب کچھ نہ کہو۔ پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ زکوٰۃ آل محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) کے لائق نہیں یہ تو لوگوں کا میل ہے۔ (شاید یہ مثل یہیں سے ہے کہ روپیہ پیسہ ہاتھوں کی میل ہے) تم میرے پاس محمیہ رضی اللہ عنہ (یہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے خزانچی کا نام تھا) جو خمس پر مقرر تھے اور نوفل بن حارث بن عبدالمطلب کو بلا لاؤ۔ راوی نے کہا کہ پھر یہ دونوں حاضر ہوئے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے محمیہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے فرمایا کہ تم اپنی لڑکی اس لڑکے فضل بن عباس کو بیاہ دو تو انہوں نے اپنی لڑکی ان سے بیاہ دی۔ اور نوفل بن حارث سے فرمایا کہ تم اپنی لڑکی اس لڑکے (یعنی عبدالمطلب بن ربیعہ سے، جو راوی حدیث ہیں) بیاہ دو تو انہوں نے اپنی لڑکی میرے نکاح میں دے دی۔ اور محمیہ سے فرمایا کہ ان دونوں کا مہر خمس سے اتنا اتنا ادا کر دو۔ زہری نے کہا کہ مجھ سے میرے شیخ عبداللہ بن عبداللہ نے مہر کی تعداد بیان نہیں کی۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 516]عبدالمطلب بن ربیعہ بن حارث کہتے ہیں کہربیعہ رضی اللہ عنہ بن حارث اور عباس رضی اللہ عنہ بن عبدالمطلب دونوں جمع ہوئے اور کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم ہم ان دونوں لڑکوں (یعنی مجھے اور فضل بن عباس) کو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس بھیج دیں، اور یہ دونوں جا کر عرض کریں کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمان کو زکوٰۃ پر تحصیلدار بنا دیں۔ اور یہ دونوں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو لا کر ادا کر دیں جیسے اور لوگ ادا کرتے ہیں اور ان کو کچھ مل جائے جیسے اور لوگوں کو ملتا ہے۔ غرض یہ گفتگو ہو رہی تھی کہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ بن ابی طالب بھی آ کر ان کے پاس کھڑے ہو گئے تو ان دونوں نے سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ سے اس کا ذکر کیا۔ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ انہیں مت بھیجو، کہ اللہ کی قسم!
