English Translation
Narrated Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The one who knows the Qur'an most should lead the people in prayer. If they are equal in the Qur'an, then the one who knows the Sunnah most; if they are equal in the Sunnah, then the one who emigrated first; if they are equal in emigration, then the one who accepted Islam first. And a man should not lead the prayer in the place of another's authority (i.e., in the presence of an appointed imam, he should not lead without his permission), nor sit on his seat of honor in his house except with his permission." Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابومسعود انصاری رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ قوم کی امامت وہ شخص کرے جو قرآن زیادہ جانتا ہو۔ اگر قرآن میں برابر ہوں تو جو سنت زیادہ جانتا ہو اگر سنت میں سب برابر ہوں تو جس نے پہلے ہجرت کی ہو۔ اگر ہجرت میں بھی سب برابر ہوں تو جو اسلام پہلے لایا ہو اور کسی کی حکومت کی جگہ میں جا کر اس کی امامت نہ کرے (یعنی مقرر شدہ امام کے ہوتے ہوئے اس کی اجازت کے بغیر امامت نہ کرائے) اور نہ اس کے گھر میں اس کی مسند پر بیٹھے مگر اس کی اجازت سے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 316]
