English Translation
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Some Muslim men saw a man with a few goats. He said: Peace be upon you (as-salamu alaykum). The Muslims seized him, killed him, and took those goats. Then this verse was revealed: "Do not say to one who offers you peace (salam), 'You are not a believer' (seeking merely to protect his life by giving the greeting)." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) read it as "salam" in this verse, and some read it as "salm" (in which case the meaning would be: one who comes to you in peace).
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہمسلمانوں کے کچھ لوگوں نے ایک شخص کو تھوڑی بکریوں میں دیکھا۔ وہ بولا کہ السلام علیکم۔ مسلمانوں نے اس کو پکڑا اور قتل کر کے وہ بکریاں لے لیں۔ تب یہ آیت اتری کہ”مت کہو اس کو جو تمہیں سلام کرے کہ تو مسلمان نہیں ہے (بلکہ اپنی جان بچانے کے لئے سلام کرتا ہے)“سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے اس آیت میں ((سلام)) پڑھا ہے اور بعض نے ((سلم)) پڑھا ہے (تو معنی یہ ہوں گے جو تم سے صلح سے پیش آئے)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 2133]
