English Translation
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Among the nations before you there was a man who had killed ninety-nine people. He asked who was the most learned person among the people of the earth. He was directed to a monk. He went to him and said that he had killed ninety-nine people—was there repentance for him? The monk said, 'No! (Your repentance will not be accepted).' So he killed the monk too and completed a hundred killings. Then he asked the people who was the most learned person on earth. He was directed to a scholar (so he went to him) and asked whether there was repentance for one who had killed a hundred people. He said, 'Yes, there is; and what could prevent repentance? Go to such-and-such land, where there are people who worship Allah; go and worship with them, and do not return to your own land, for it is an evil land.' So he set out toward that land. When he had covered half the journey, death came to him. Then the angels of punishment and the angels of mercy disputed over him. The angels of mercy said, 'He came repenting, turning toward Allah with a sincere heart.' The angels of punishment said, 'He never did any good.' Then an angel came in the form of a man, and they appointed him to judge between them. He said, 'Measure the distance to both lands, and whichever land he is nearer to, he belongs to that.' So they measured the distance and found him nearer to the land he had intended, so the angels of mercy took him." Qatadah said that (the narrator) Hasan said: "It was also narrated to us that when he was about to die, he crept forward on his chest (so as to be nearer to that land)."
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابو سعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا: تم سے پہلی امتوں میں ایک شخص تھا، جس نے ننانوے قتل کئے تھے۔ اس نے پوچھا کہ زمین کے لوگوں میں سب سے زیادہ عالم کون ہے؟ لوگوں نے ایک راہب کے بارے میں بتایا، وہ اس کے پاس گیا اور کہا کہ اس نے ننانوے قتل کئے ہیں، کیا اس کے لئے توبہ ہے؟ راہب نے کہا کہ نہیں! (تیری توبہ قبول نہ ہو گی) تو اس نے اس راہب کو بھی مار ڈالا اور سو قتل پورے کر لئے۔ پھر اس نے لوگوں سے پوچھا کہ زمین میں سب سے زیادہ عالم کون ہے؟ لوگوں نے ایک عالم کے بارے میں بتایا (تو وہ اس کے پاس گیا) اور پوچھا کہ اس نے سو قتل کئے ہیں، کیا اس کے لئے توبہ ہے؟ وہ بولا کہ ہاں ہے اور توبہ کرنے سے کون سی چیز مانع ہے؟ تو فلاں ملک میں جا اور وہاں کچھ لوگ ہیں جو اللہ تعالیٰ کی عبادت کرتے ہیں، تو بھی جا کر ان کے ساتھ عبادت کر اور اپنے ملک میں مت جا کہ وہ برا ملک ہے۔ پھر وہ اس ملک کی طرف چلا، جب آدھا سفر طے کر لیا تو اس کو موت آ گئی۔ اب عذاب کے فرشتوں اور رحمت کے فرشتوں میں جھگڑا ہوا۔ رحمت کے فرشتوں نے کہا کہ یہ توبہ کر کے صدق دل کے ساتھ اللہ کی طرف متوجہ ہو کر آ رہا تھا۔ اور عذاب کے فرشتوں نے کہا کہ اس نے کوئی نیکی نہیں کی۔ آخر ایک فرشتہ آدمی کی صورت بن کر آیا اور انہوں نے اس کو فیصلہ کرنے کے لئے مقرر کیا۔ اس نے کہا کہ دونوں طرف کی زمین ناپو اور جس ملک کے قریب ہو، وہ وہیں کا ہے۔ سو انہوں نے زمین کو ناپا تو انہوں نے اس زمین کو قریب پایا جس کا اس نے ارادہ کیا تھا، پس رحمت کے فرشتے اس کو لے گئے۔ قتادہ نے کہا (راوی حدیث) حسن نے کہا کہ ہم سے یہ بھی بیان ہوا کہ جب وہ مرنے لگا تو اپنے سینہ کے بل بڑھا (تاکہ اس ملک سے نزدیک ہو جائے)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1919]
