English Translation
Ibn Umar narrated: When Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, Quraysh did not know about his Islam. He said: 'O people of Mecca, who spreads news the fastest?' They said: Jamil ibn Ma'mar al-Jumahi. So he went to him, and I was with him following his trail, understanding what I saw and heard. He came to him and said: 'O Jamil, I have accepted Islam.' By Allah, he did not reply to him with a single word until he stood up heading to the mosque and called out to the assemblies of Quraysh, saying: O assembly of Quraysh, indeed Ibn al-Khattab has apostatized! Umar said: 'He lied, but I have accepted Islam and believed in Allah and affirmed His Messenger.' They attacked him and he fought them until the sun stood still over their heads, until Umar became exhausted and sat down. They stood over his head, and Umar said: 'Do what you wish. By Allah, if we were three hundred men, you would either have left it for us or we would have left it for you.' While they were thus standing over him, a man came wearing a silk robe and a Qawmasi shirt. He said: What is the matter with you? They said: Indeed, Ibn al-Khattab has apostatized. He said: So what? A man has chosen a religion for himself. Do you think that Bani Adi will hand over their companion to you? He said: It was as if they were a garment that was lifted off him. I said to him later in Medina: O father, who was the man who turned the people away from you that day? He said: 'O my son, that was al-As ibn Wa'il.'
