Hadrat Khuwaylah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be well pleased with her) said: By Allah, it was regarding me and Aws ibn al-Samit that Allah the Exalted and Majestic revealed the opening of Surah al-Mujadilah. She said: I was married to him and he was an old man whose temper had become bad and irritable. She said: One day he came in and I argued with him about something, so he became angry and said: "You are to me like the back of my mother" (i.e., zihar). Then he went out and sat in the gathering of his people for a while, then came back wanting intimacy from me. She said: I said: "No! By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Khuwaylah, you will not reach me after having said what you said until Allah and His Messenger judge between us." She said: He tried to overpower me, but I resisted and overcame him as a woman overcomes a weak old man, and I threw him beneath me. Then I went out to one of my neighbors, borrowed garments from her, and went to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). I sat before him and told him what I had endured from him, complaining of his bad temper. She said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) kept saying: "O Khuwaylah, your cousin is an old man, so fear Allah regarding him." She said: By Allah, I had not left when the Quran descended upon him, and the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was overtaken by what used to overtake him (during revelation). Then it was lifted from him and he said: "O Khuwaylah, Allah the Exalted and Majestic has revealed (verses) regarding you and your husband." She said: Then he recited to me: {Indeed, Allah has heard the statement of the woman who disputes with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah} until {and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment}. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Tell him to free a slave." She said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, he has nothing to free." He stated: "Then let him fast two consecutive months." She said: I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is an old man who cannot fast." He stated: "Then let him feed sixty poor people with a wasq (a measure) of dates." I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have that." She said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Then we will help him with a large basket of dates." She said: I said: "And I, O Messenger of Allah, will help him with another basket." He stated: "You have done well and acted excellently. Go and give it in charity on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin." She said: And so I did.
Urdu Translation
حضرت خویلہ بنت ثعلبہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! میرے اور اوس بن صامت کے بارے میں اللہ عزوجل نے سورۃ المجادلہ کا آغاز نازل فرمایا۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: میں ان کی بیوی تھی اور وہ بوڑھے آدمی تھے جن کے اخلاق بگڑ گئے تھے اور بڑے چڑچڑے ہو گئے تھے۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: ایک دن وہ میرے پاس آئے اور میں نے کسی بات پر ان سے بحث کی تو وہ ناراض ہو گئے اور کہا: تم مجھ پر میری ماں کی پیٹھ کی طرح ہو (یعنی ظہار)۔ پھر وہ باہر نکلے اور اپنی قوم کی مجلس میں کچھ دیر بیٹھے پھر واپس آئے اور قربت چاہی۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے کہا: نہیں! اس ذات کی قسم جس کے ہاتھ میں خویلہ کی جان ہے، تم نے جو کہا ہے اس کے بعد تم مجھ تک نہیں پہنچ سکتے جب تک اللہ اور اس کے رسول ہمارے درمیان فیصلہ نہ فرمائیں۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: انہوں نے مجھ پر غلبہ حاصل کرنا چاہا لیکن میں نے روکا اور جیسے عورت کمزور بوڑھے پر غالب آتی ہے ویسے غالب آئی اور انہیں اپنے نیچے گرا دیا۔ پھر میں اپنی ایک پڑوسن کے پاس گئی اور اس سے کپڑے ادھار لیے، پھر نکلی اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئی۔ آپ کے سامنے بیٹھی اور جو مجھے ان سے پیش آیا بیان کیا اور ان کے بد اخلاقی کی شکایت کی۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم فرماتے رہے: اے خویلہ! تمہارے چچا زاد بھائی بوڑھے ہیں، ان کے بارے میں اللہ سے ڈرو۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! میں ابھی وہاں سے اٹھی نہیں تھی کہ قرآن نازل ہوا اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر وہ کیفیت طاری ہوئی جو وحی کے وقت ہوتی تھی۔ پھر آپ سے وہ کیفیت دور ہوئی تو فرمایا: اے خویلہ! اللہ عزوجل نے تمہارے اور تمہارے شوہر کے بارے میں نازل فرمایا ہے۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: پھر آپ نے مجھے تلاوت فرمائی: {بے شک اللہ نے اس عورت کی بات سن لی جو اپنے شوہر کے بارے میں تم سے جھگڑا کرتی ہے اور اللہ سے فریاد کرتی ہے} سے {اور کافروں کے لیے دردناک عذاب ہے} تک۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: اسے کہو کہ ایک غلام آزاد کرے۔ انہوں نے کہا: میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! اس کے پاس آزاد کرنے کے لیے کچھ نہیں ہے۔ ارشاد فرمایا: تو لگاتار دو مہینے روزے رکھے۔ انہوں نے کہا: میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کی قسم! یا رسول اللہ! وہ بوڑھا ہے، روزے نہیں رکھ سکتا۔ ارشاد فرمایا: تو ساٹھ مسکینوں کو ایک وسق کھجوریں کھلائے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کی قسم! یا رسول اللہ! اس کے پاس اتنا نہیں ہے۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: تو ہم اسے کھجوروں کا ایک بڑا ٹوکرا دے کر مدد کریں گے۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میں بھی ایک اور ٹوکرے سے اس کی مدد کروں گی۔ ارشاد فرمایا: تم نے اچھا کیا اور بہترین کیا، جاؤ اور اس کی طرف سے صدقہ کر دو، پھر اپنے چچا زاد بھائی کے ساتھ اچھا سلوک کرو۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے ایسا ہی کیا۔
