Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stating: "Indeed, there were three men among the Children of Israel: a leper, a bald man, and a blind man. Allah willed to test them, so He sent an angel to them. The angel came to the leper and asked: 'What thing is most beloved to you?' He said: 'A beautiful complexion and beautiful skin.' He asked: 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Camels.' So the angel wiped him, and his ailment departed, and he was given a pregnant she-camel, and the angel said: 'May Allah bless you therein.' Then the angel came to the bald man and asked: 'What thing is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Beautiful hair, and that this which has made people loathe me should depart.' So the angel wiped him, and it departed, and he was given beautiful hair. He asked: 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Cattle.' So he was given a pregnant cow, and the angel said: 'May Allah bless you therein.' Then the angel came to the blind man and asked: 'What thing is most beloved to you?' He said: 'That Allah restore my sight so that I may see people.' So the angel wiped him, and Allah restored his sight. He asked: 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?' He said: 'Sheep.' So he was given a pregnant ewe. Then the first two bred and the third produced young, until one had a valley full of camels, another a valley full of cattle, and the third a valley full of sheep. Then the angel came to the leper in his former appearance and said: 'A poor man and a wayfarer — my provisions have been cut off in my journey, and I have no means today except through Allah and then through you. I ask you by the One who gave you the beautiful complexion, the beautiful skin, and the wealth, for a camel to carry me on my journey.' The leper said: 'The obligations are many.' The angel said: 'I seem to recognize you — were you not a leper whom people loathed, and were you not poor, and then Allah gave you wealth?' He said: 'I only inherited this wealth from my forefathers.' The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to what you were.' Then the angel came to the bald man in his former appearance and said to him the same as he had said to the leper, and the bald man gave a similar reply. The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to what you were.' Then the angel came to the blind man in his former appearance and said: 'A poor man and a wayfarer — my provisions have been cut off in my journey.' The blind man said: 'Indeed, I was blind and Allah restored my sight; take whatever you wish and leave whatever you wish. By Allah, I shall not burden you today for anything you take for the sake of Allah.' The angel said: 'Keep your wealth, for you were only being tested. Allah is pleased with you and displeased with your two companions.'"

حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ انہوں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو ارشاد فرماتے ہوئے سنا: «بے شک بنی اسرائیل میں تین آدمی تھے: ایک کوڑھی، ایک گنجا اور ایک اندھا۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان کو آزمانا چاہا تو ان کے پاس ایک فرشتہ بھیجا۔ فرشتہ کوڑھی کے پاس آیا اور کہا: تمہیں سب سے زیادہ کیا پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: اچھا رنگ اور اچھی جلد۔ کہا: تمہیں کون سا مال سب سے زیادہ پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: اونٹ۔ فرشتے نے اسے مسح کیا تو اس کا کوڑھ دور ہو گیا اور اسے ایک حاملہ اونٹنی دی گئی اور فرشتے نے کہا: اللہ تمہیں اس میں برکت دے۔ پھر فرشتہ گنجے کے پاس آیا اور کہا: تمہیں سب سے زیادہ کیا پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: اچھے بال، اور یہ جو لوگوں نے مجھے ناپسند کیا ہے وہ دور ہو جائے۔ فرشتے نے اسے مسح کیا تو وہ دور ہو گیا اور اسے اچھے بال دیے گئے۔ کہا: تمہیں کون سا مال سب سے زیادہ پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: گائے۔ تو اسے حاملہ گائے دی گئی اور فرشتے نے کہا: اللہ تمہیں اس میں برکت دے۔ پھر فرشتہ اندھے کے پاس آیا اور کہا: تمہیں سب سے زیادہ کیا پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: اللہ مجھے میری بینائی لوٹا دے تاکہ میں لوگوں کو دیکھ سکوں۔ فرشتے نے اسے مسح کیا تو اللہ نے اسے بینائی لوٹا دی۔ کہا: تمہیں کون سا مال سب سے زیادہ پسند ہے؟ اس نے کہا: بکریاں۔ تو اسے حاملہ بکری دی گئی۔ پھر ان دونوں نے بچے دیے اور اس نے بھی، یہاں تک کہ ایک کے پاس اونٹوں سے بھری وادی ہو گئی، دوسرے کے پاس گایوں سے بھری وادی، اور تیسرے کے پاس بکریوں سے بھری وادی۔ پھر فرشتہ کوڑھی کے پاس اسی شکل و صورت میں آیا اور کہا: میں مسکین اور مسافر ہوں، سفر میں میرا سامان ختم ہو گیا ہے، آج اللہ کے بعد تمہارے سوا میرا کوئی سہارا نہیں۔ تمہیں اس ذات کا واسطہ جس نے تمہیں اچھا رنگ، اچھی جلد اور مال دیا، مجھے ایک اونٹ دے دو جس سے میں اپنا سفر پورا کروں۔ کوڑھی نے کہا: حقوق تو بہت ہیں۔ فرشتے نے کہا: مجھے لگتا ہے میں تمہیں پہچانتا ہوں، کیا تم وہ نہیں جو کوڑھی تھے جس سے لوگ گھن کھاتے تھے، محتاج تھے، پھر اللہ نے تمہیں مال دیا؟ اس نے کہا: مجھے تو یہ مال باپ دادا سے وراثت میں ملا ہے۔ فرشتے نے کہا: اگر تم جھوٹے ہو تو اللہ تمہیں ویسا ہی کر دے جیسے تم تھے۔ پھر فرشتہ گنجے کے پاس اسی شکل میں آیا اور اس سے بھی ایسا ہی کہا جیسا اس سے کہا تھا، اس نے بھی ویسا ہی جواب دیا۔ فرشتے نے کہا: اگر تم جھوٹے ہو تو اللہ تمہیں ویسا ہی کر دے جیسے تم تھے۔ پھر فرشتہ اندھے کے پاس اسی شکل و صورت میں آیا اور کہا: مسکین اور مسافر ہوں، سفر میں سامان ختم ہو گیا ہے۔ اندھے نے کہا: میں اندھا تھا، اللہ نے مجھے بینائی لوٹا دی، جو چاہو لے لو اور جو چاہو چھوڑ دو۔ اللہ کی قسم! آج جو کچھ بھی تم اللہ کے لیے لو گے، میں تم پر کوئی بوجھ نہیں ڈالوں گا۔ فرشتے نے کہا: اپنا مال رکھو، تم صرف آزمائے گئے تھے، اللہ تم سے راضی ہوا اور تمہارے دونوں ساتھیوں سے ناراض ہوا۔»
