Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrated: The Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr sent Dimam ibn Tha'labah (may Allah be well pleased with him) to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He arrived, made his camel kneel at the door of the mosque, tied it, and entered the mosque while the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was sitting among his Companions. Dimam was a sturdy, hairy man with two braids. He stood before the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and asked: 'Which of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib?' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.' He asked: 'Muhammad?' He stated: 'Yes.' He said: 'O son of Abd al-Muttalib, I shall question you and be stern in my questioning, so do not take offense.' He stated: 'I take no offense, so ask what you wish.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, your God and the God of those before you and those after you — did Allah send you to us as a Messenger?' He stated: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah — did Allah command you that we worship Him alone without associating anything with Him, and that we abandon these idols which our forefathers used to worship besides Him?' He stated: 'O Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah — did Allah command you that we pray these five prayers?' He stated: 'O Allah, yes.' Then he went on mentioning the obligations of Islam one by one — Zakat, fasting, Hajj, and all the laws of Islam — adjuring him at each obligation as he had before, until when he finished he said: 'I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I shall fulfill these obligations and avoid what you have forbidden me.' Then he said: 'I shall neither add nor diminish.' Then he went to his camel. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated when he turned away: 'If the man with the two braids has spoken the truth, he shall enter Paradise.' He went to his camel, untied it, and departed until he reached his people. They gathered around him, and the first thing he said was: 'How wretched are al-Lat and al-Uzza!' They cried: 'Hush, O Dimam! Beware of leprosy, beware of madness, beware of elephantiasis!' He said: 'Woe to you! By Allah, they can neither harm nor benefit. Verily Allah has sent a Messenger and revealed a Book through which He has rescued you from what you were in. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. I have come to you from him with what he has commanded and forbidden you.' By Allah, before that day ended, there was not a man or woman in his settlement who had not become Muslim. Ibn Abbas said: 'We never heard of a delegation emissary more excellent than Dimam ibn Tha'labah.'

حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ بنو سعد بن بکر نے ضمام بن ثعلبہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس بھیجا۔ وہ آئے، اپنا اونٹ مسجد کے دروازے پر بٹھایا، اسے باندھا، پھر مسجد میں داخل ہوئے جبکہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اپنے صحابہ کے درمیان تشریف فرما تھے۔ ضمام ایک مضبوط بالوں والے آدمی تھے جن کی دو چوٹیاں تھیں۔ وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے سامنے کھڑے ہوئے اور کہا: تم میں سے عبدالمطلب کا بیٹا کون ہے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: میں عبدالمطلب کا بیٹا ہوں۔ اس نے کہا: محمد؟ ارشاد فرمایا: ہاں۔ اس نے کہا: اے ابن عبدالمطلب، میں آپ سے سوال کروں گا اور سختی سے پوچھوں گا تو برا نہ مانیے گا۔ ارشاد فرمایا: میں برا نہیں مانوں گا، جو چاہو پوچھو۔ اس نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں جو آپ کا معبود ہے اور آپ سے پہلے والوں کا اور آپ کے بعد والوں کا — کیا اللہ نے آپ کو ہماری طرف رسول بنا کر بھیجا؟ ارشاد فرمایا: اے اللہ ہاں۔ اس نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں — کیا اللہ نے آپ کو حکم دیا کہ ہم صرف اسی کی عبادت کریں، کسی کو اس کا شریک نہ ٹھہرائیں اور یہ بت چھوڑ دیں جو ہمارے باپ دادا اس کے سوا پوجتے تھے؟ ارشاد فرمایا: اے اللہ ہاں۔ اس نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں — کیا اللہ نے آپ کو حکم دیا کہ ہم یہ پانچ نمازیں پڑھیں؟ ارشاد فرمایا: اے اللہ ہاں۔ پھر وہ اسلام کے فرائض ایک ایک کر کے بیان کرتا رہا — زکوٰۃ، روزہ، حج اور اسلام کے تمام احکام — ہر فرض پر اسی طرح قسم دیتا رہا جیسے پہلے دی تھی۔ جب فارغ ہوا تو کہا: میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد اس کے بندے اور رسول ہیں۔ میں یہ فرائض ادا کروں گا اور جن چیزوں سے آپ نے منع کیا ان سے بچوں گا۔ پھر کہا: نہ زیادہ کروں گا نہ کم۔ پھر اپنے اونٹ کی طرف لوٹا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے جب وہ مڑا تو ارشاد فرمایا: اگر دو چوٹیوں والے نے سچ کہا تو جنت میں داخل ہوگا۔ وہ اپنے اونٹ کے پاس آیا، اس کی رسی کھولی اور چل پڑا یہاں تک کہ اپنی قوم میں پہنچا۔ لوگ اس کے پاس جمع ہوئے۔ اس نے سب سے پہلے یہ کہا: لات اور عزیٰ بہت بری ہیں! لوگوں نے کہا: خاموش ہو جاؤ اے ضمام! برص سے ڈرو، جنون سے ڈرو، جذام سے ڈرو! اس نے کہا: تم پر افسوس! اللہ کی قسم یہ نہ نقصان پہنچا سکتے ہیں نہ نفع۔ بے شک اللہ نے ایک رسول بھیجا ہے اور اس پر کتاب نازل کی ہے جس کے ذریعے تمہیں اس گمراہی سے نکالا ہے جس میں تم تھے۔ میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد اس کے بندے اور رسول ہیں۔ میں تمہارے پاس ان کے پاس سے وہ لے کر آیا ہوں جو انہوں نے تمہیں حکم دیا اور جس سے منع کیا۔ اللہ کی قسم اس دن شام تک ان کی بستی میں کوئی مرد و عورت نہ رہا مگر مسلمان ہو گیا۔ ابن عباس فرماتے ہیں: ہم نے ضمام بن ثعلبہ سے افضل کسی قوم کا وفد نہیں سنا۔
