English Translation
Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we used to talk during prayer. One of us would speak to the person next to him about his needs, until this verse was revealed: "Guard strictly your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience" (al-Baqarah: 238). Then we were commanded to remain silent in prayer.
Urdu Translation
سیدنا زید بن ارقم رضی اللہ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہہم نماز میں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے عہد میں پہلے کلام کیا کرتے تھے۔ ہم میں سے کوئی شخص اپنی ضرورت اپنے پاس والے سے کہہ دیا کرتا تھا یہاں تک کہ یہ آیت نازل ہوئی:”اپنی نمازوں کی حفاظت کرو اور خاص کر درمیانی نماز کی اور اللہ کے سامنے ادب سے کھڑے رہو۔“(سورۃ البقرہ: 238)۔ پس ہمیں نماز میں سکوت کا حکم دے دیا گیا۔[مختصر صحيح بخاري/حدیث: 625]
