Hadrat Urwa bin al-Zubair (upon him be mercy) narrates: 'I said to the wife of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Aisha al-Siddiqa (may Allah be well pleased with her), while I was still young: "Regarding the statement of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted: 'Indeed Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or Umrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them' -- I understand from this that there is no blame on one who does not perform Sa'i between them." Umm al-Mu'minin declared: "Absolutely not! If it meant what you say, then the verse would have read: 'There is no blame on him if he does not go between them.' This verse was revealed regarding the Ansar, who used to assume Ihram for the idol Manat, which was placed near Qudaid, and they considered it wrong to perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. When Islam came, they asked the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about it, and Allah, the Exalted, revealed: 'Indeed Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or Umrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them.'" Sufyan and Abu Mu'awiya added from Hisham: 'Allah does not complete the Hajj or Umrah of anyone who does not perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah.'

حضرت عروہ بن حضرت زبیر رحمۃ اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ سے روایت ہے، انہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی زوجہ مطہرہ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے عرض کیا جبکہ ابھی میں نوعمر تھا کہ اللہ تبارک و تعالیٰ کا ارشاد ہے: 'بے شک صفا اور مروہ اللہ کی نشانیوں میں سے ہیں تو جو بیت اللہ کا حج یا عمرہ کرے اس پر کوئی گناہ نہیں کہ وہ ان دونوں کا طواف (سعی) کرے' تو میں سمجھتا ہوں کہ اگر کوئی ان کی سعی نہ کرے تو اس پر کوئی حرج نہ ہو گا۔ اُمّ المؤمنین نے فرمایا: ہرگز نہیں! اگر مطلب یہ ہوتا جو تم کہہ رہے ہو تو آیت یوں ہوتی 'کوئی حرج نہیں اگر ان کی سعی نہ کرے'۔ یہ آیت تو انصار کے بارے میں نازل ہوئی ہے جو بت مناۃ کے نام کا احرام باندھتے تھے جو مقام قدید کے مقابل میں رکھا ہوا تھا اور وہ صفا و مروہ کی سعی کو برا سمجھتے تھے۔ جب اسلام آیا تو انہوں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے دریافت کیا، اس پر اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت نازل فرمائی: 'بے شک صفا اور مروہ اللہ کی نشانیوں میں سے ہیں تو جو بیت اللہ کا حج یا عمرہ کرے اس پر کوئی گناہ نہیں کہ وہ ان دونوں کی سعی کرے'۔ سفیان اور حضرت ابومعاویہ نے ہشام سے یہ اضافہ نقل کیا ہے کہ جس نے صفا و مروہ کی سعی نہ کی اللہ تعالیٰ اس کا حج اور عمرہ مکمل نہیں فرماتا۔
