Arabic (Original)
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسًا ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُفْطِرُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَظُنَّ أَنْ لاَ يَصُومَ مِنْهُ، وَيَصُومُ حَتَّى نَظُنَّ أَنْ لاَ يُفْطِرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، وَكَانَ لاَ تَشَاءُ أَنْ تَرَاهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مُصَلِّيًا إِلاَّ رَأَيْتَهُ وَلاَ نَائِمًا إِلاَّ رَأَيْتَهُ. تَابَعَهُ سُلَيْمَانُ وَأَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ.
English Translation
It is narrated from Hadrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: Sometimes the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would not fast for so many days in a month that we would think he would not fast at all that month. And if he began fasting, we would think he would not leave fasting at all that month. As for the night, whenever you wished to see him praying, you could see him praying, and whenever you wished to see him sleeping, you could see him sleeping.
Urdu Translation
حضرت انس بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کسی مہینے میں روزہ نہ رکھتے تو ایسا معلوم ہوتا کہ اب آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اس مہینے میں روزہ ہی نہیں رکھیں گے، اور اگر روزے رکھنا شروع فرماتے تو خیال ہوتا کہ اب ایک دن بھی بغیر روزے کے نہیں رہ جائے گا۔ رات کو نماز ایسی پڑھتے تھے کہ تم جب چاہتے آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو نماز پڑھتے دیکھ لیتے اور جب چاہتے سوتا ہوا دیکھ لیتے۔
