حَدَّثنا محمد بن المثنى حَدَّثنا محمد بن جعفر حَدَّثنا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَن أَنَس أَن النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم أُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ قَدْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فَجَلَدَهُ بِجَرِيدَتَيْنِ نَحْوًا مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ وَفَعَلَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَر اسْتَشَارَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَخَفَّ الْحُدُودِ ثَمَانِينَ فَأَمَر بِهِ عُمَرُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم أُتِيَ بِرَجُلٍ قَدْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فَجَلَدَهُ بِجَرِيدَتَيْنِ نَحْوًا مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ وَفَعَلَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَر اسْتَشَارَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَخَفَّ الْحُدُودِ ثَمَانِينَ فَأَمَر بِهِ عُمَرُ
English Translation
Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was brought a man who had consumed alcohol, so he struck him with two palm-leaf stalks approximately forty times. Abu Bakr did the same. When it was the time of Umar, he consulted the people, and Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf said: The lightest of the prescribed punishments is eighty. So Umar ordered it.
