English Translation
Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Khalid ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Humayd narrated to us, from Hadrat Anas (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: Hadrat Anas ibn an-Nadr (may Allah be well pleased with him) was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said: "I was absent from the first battle the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) fought against the polytheists. If Allah, Blessed and Exalted, allows me to witness a battle with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will surely see what I do." When the Day of Uhud came and the Muslims retreated, he said: "O Allah, I declare myself innocent before You of what these have brought" — meaning the polytheists — "and I apologize to You for what these have done" — meaning the Muslims. Then he went forward with his sword. Hadrat Sa'd ibn Muadh (may Allah be well pleased with him) met him and said: "Where, O Anas?" He said: "By Allah, I find it beyond Uhud." He said: So he went forward and fought. Anas said: We found on him over eighty wounds between sword strikes, spear thrusts, and arrow shots, and they mutilated him. He said: We did not recognize him except by his fingers. He said: And this verse was revealed: 'Among the believers are men who have been true to what they covenanted with Allah.'"
