Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Mufarrij informed us, he said: Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ayyub ibn Habib ibn Yahya al-Raqqi al-Samut narrated to us, he said: Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn 'Amr ibn 'Abd al-Khaliq al-Basri al-Azdi al-Bazzar narrated to me, he said: Salamah ibn Shabib narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, he said: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn 'Umar, from 'Umar. And 'Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Yaman al-Hakam ibn Nafi' narrated to us, he said: Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Salim ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar narrated to me that he heard his father 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar say that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: When Hafsah became widowed from Khunays ibn Hudhafah al-Sahmi, who was among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and had witnessed Badr and died in Madinah, 'Umar said: I met 'Uthman ibn 'Affan and offered Hafsah to him, saying: 'If you wish, I will give you Hafsah bint 'Umar in marriage.' He said: 'I will think about it.' After some nights, he met me and said: 'I do not wish to marry at this time.' Then I met Abu Bakr and said: 'If you wish, I will give you Hafsah bint 'Umar in marriage.' Abu Bakr was silent and did not respond, and I was more upset with him than with 'Uthman. After some nights, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to her, and I gave her in marriage to him. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and said: 'Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsah and I did not respond?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from responding to your offer except that I knew the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned Hafsah, and I would not reveal the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Had he left her, I would have accepted her or married her.' This hadith enters into both the Musnad of Abu Bakr and 'Umar. Most of the narrative is from 'Umar, and what relates to Abu Bakr is his statement that he knew the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned Hafsah and he disliked revealing the Prophet's secret - as though it were an account about the Messenger of Allah and an informing by him to 'Umar about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
