أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ حَدَّثَنِي أَيُّوبُ قَالَ كَتَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ زَادَ وَإِنَّ أَحْسَنَ مَا يَقْدِرُ لَهُ أَنَّا رَأَيْنَا هِلَالَ شَعْبَانَ لِكَذَا أَوْ كَذَا وَالصَّوْمُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ لِكَذَا وَكَذَا إِلَّا أَنْ تَرَوَا الْهِلَالَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ وَالَّذِي يَدُلُّ عَلَى صِحَّةِ مَا ذَكَرَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ سَائِرُ الرِّوَايَاتِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ مِنْهَا عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ
English Translation
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote to the people of Basra: 'It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said' — and he mentioned a hadith similar to that of Ibn Umar from the Prophet — adding: 'The best way to estimate it is that when we see the crescent of Sha'ban on such-and-such a day, then fasting, God willing, begins on such-and-such a day — unless you see the crescent before that.'
