English Translation
Ibn Abbas narrated regarding the verse: 'O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous' [Al-Baqarah 183]: 'People during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), when they prayed the night prayer, food, drink, and women were forbidden to them, and they would fast until the next evening. Then a man betrayed himself and had relations with his wife after praying Isha without having broken his fast. Allah wished to make that an ease for those who remained, and a concession and benefit, so He said: "Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you and forgave you" [Al-Baqarah 187]. This was among the things by which Allah benefited the people — He granted them concession and ease.'
