أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا أَبُو ثَابِتٍ الْمَدَنِيُّ ثنا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كِنَانَةَ مِنْ بَنِي مَالِكِ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ أَرْسَلَ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الِاسْتِسْقَاءِ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا تَمَارَيْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فِي صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الِاسْتِسْقَاءِ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ أَرْسَلَ ابْنُ أَخِيكُمْ يَعْنِي الْوَلِيدَ وَهُوَ أَمِيرُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُتَبَذِّلًا مُتَوَاضِعًا مُتَضَرِّعًا فَجَلَسَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَلَمْ يَخْطُبْ خُطْبَتَكُمْ هَذِهِ وَلَكِنْ لَمْ يَزَلْ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَالتَّضَرُّعِ وَالتَّكْبِيرِ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ كَمَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ
English Translation
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan narrated to us... from Ibn Abbas, that al-Walid sent to Ibn Abbas asking him about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) for rain. He came to him and said: 'We disagreed in the mosque about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah for rain.' Ibn Abbas said: 'No, rather your nephew - meaning al-Walid, who was the governor of Madinah at that time - sent you.' Ibn Abbas said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out humbly, modestly, and imploringly. He sat on the pulpit but did not deliver a sermon like your sermons. Rather, he continued in supplication, imploring, and saying the takbir. Then he prayed two units of prayer as he used to pray on the two Eids.'
