English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan narrated to us in Baghdad... from Jabir who said: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and that was on the day Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah, died. The people said: 'The sun has eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim.' So the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood and prayed with the people six bowings in four prostrations. He said the takbir then recited, prolonging the recitation. Then he bowed for about as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and recited shorter than the first recitation. Then he bowed for about as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and recited a third recitation shorter than the second. Then he bowed for about as long as he stood. Then he raised his head and went down to prostrate, making two prostrations. Then he stood and bowed three times before prostrating, each bowing shorter than the one before it, with his bowing being about as long as his standing. Then he stepped back during his prayer and the rows stepped back with him. Then he stepped forward and stood in his place and the rows stepped forward with him. He completed the prayer and the sun had risen. He said: 'O people, the sun and the moon are two signs from among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse for the death of any human being. When you see anything like that, pray until it clears.'
