English Translation
'Ali ibn Ahmad ibn 'Abdan informed us... from Ahmad ibn 'Ubayd al-Saffar... from Isma'il ibn Ishaq the judge... from Sulayman ibn Bilal, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah who heard him say: 'The sermon of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on Friday was that he would praise Allah and glorify Him, then he would say after that, with his voice raised and his anger intensified, and his cheeks reddened, as if he were warning of an approaching army, saying: It has reached you this morning or this evening! Then he would say: I have been sent, I and the Hour, like these two - and he pointed with his index and middle fingers. Then he would say: The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of affairs are newly invented matters, and every innovation is misguidance. Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family; and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, then it is upon me and my responsibility.' This is the wording of Ibn Abi Uways. [And another chain reports the same from Jabir with similar wording.]
