English Translation
Sahl ibn Sa'd narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went to Banu Amr ibn Awf to make peace between them. The prayer time came and the muezzin came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: 'Will you lead the people in prayer so I can establish it?' He said: 'Yes.' So Abu Bakr led the prayer. The Messenger of Allah came while the people were in prayer, passed through until he stood in the row. The people clapped, and Abu Bakr never turned around in prayer. When the people increased their clapping, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah gestured to him to stay in his place. Abu Bakr raised his hands and praised Allah for what the Messenger of Allah had commanded him, then stepped back until he was even with the row. The Messenger of Allah stepped forward and led the prayer. When he finished, he said: 'O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying when I commanded you?' Abu Bakr said: 'It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to pray in front of the Messenger of Allah.' Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever has something happen in his prayer, let him say SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), for when he says it, he will be attended to. Clapping is only for women.'
