English Translation
Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fell behind - and he mentioned the story - and he said: We came to the people while Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was leading them in the Fajr prayer. When he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), he wanted to move back, but he gestured to him to continue. He said: So I and the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed one rak'ah behind him. When he gave salam, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and prayed the rak'ah he had missed, and did not add anything to it. Abu Dawud said: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Ibn Umar, and Ibn al-Zubayr say: 'Whoever catches the obligatory [prayer with the imam] must perform the two prostrations of forgetfulness [if the imam did].' The Shaykh [al-Bayhaqi] said: The hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is more worthy of being followed.
