English Translation
Abdullah ibn Hanzalah said: I was with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) when he heard a man swearing by Surah al-Baqarah. He said: Do you think he will be expiated? For every verse there is an oath upon him. The statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, along with the mursal hadith, is evidence that swearing by the Quran constitutes an oath in general. However, the severity of the expiation mentioned is abandoned by scholarly consensus.
