English Translation
Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr informed us: Abu Abdullah al-Saffar narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Birti narrated to us: Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us: Ikrimah — that is, Ibn Ammar — narrated to us, from Yahya, who said: A freedman of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas narrated to me; he said: We were with Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), and we came upon a valley in which were date-palms that had ripened. He gave me two dirhams and said: "Buy us fodder and dates." I went, but found no one at the palms, so I returned to him and told him. He said to me: "If it would please you to be a true believer, then do not eat a single date from the palms." So he spent the night — and our donkeys spent the night — hungry.
