Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr informed us; they said: Abu al-Abbas narrated to us: Harun narrated to us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Qatadah, from Waqi ibn Sahban, from Usayr ibn Jabir, who said: Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whoever attaches himself to a thing [as a charm] is entrusted to it." He said: And Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Jarir ibn Hazim, who said: I heard al-Hasan say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attaches himself to a thing is entrusted to it." He said: And Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from al-Hajjaj, from Fudayl, that Sa'id ibn Jubayr used to write the protective charm (mu'adhah) for his son. He said: And I asked Ata, and he said: "We used only to dislike something that came to us from your direction."
