English Translation
Some of our companions argued with what Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam informed us, Ibn Wahb informed us, Yahya ibn Abdullah ibn Salim and Ya'qub ibn Abd al-Rahman informed me from Amr - the freed slave of al-Muttalib - from al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah, and from a man of Banu Salamah, that they both narrated to him that Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed them that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer on the Day of Sacrifice. When he finished his sermon and prayer, he called for a ram, slaughtered it himself, and said: "In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is on my behalf and on behalf of whoever has not sacrificed from my nation." This was also narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Abu Hurayrah, and Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with them) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with similar meaning. Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has reached us that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to not sacrifice, out of concern that people would follow their example and think it was obligatory.
