English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Harun, from Jarir ibn Hazim, from Bashshar ibn Abi Sayf, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Iyad ibn Ghutayf — and Yazid said: Hisham ibn Hassan informed us from Wasil, the freed slave of Abu Uyaynah, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Iyad ibn Ghutayf — who said: We visited Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah during the illness in which he died, and his wife was tending to him, with his face toward the wall. We asked: How did Abu Ubaydah spend the night? She said: He spent the night earning reward. He turned to us and said: I did not spend the night earning reward. That displeased us and we fell silent. He said: Will you not ask about what I said? We said: We were not pleased by it, so why would we ask you about it? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Whoever spends an excellent expenditure in the cause of Allah, it is multiplied seven hundred fold. Whoever spends on himself, or removes something harmful from the road, or gives charity, the good deed is multiplied by ten. Fasting is a shield as long as one does not pierce it. And whoever is tested by Allah with an affliction in his body, it is an expiation for him. And Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Muqri' informed us, from al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yusuf ibn Ya'qub, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Asma', from Mahdi ibn Maymun, from Wasil the freed slave of Abu Uyaynah, from Ibn Abi Sayf, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman — a man among the jurists of al-Sham — from Iyad ibn Ghutayf; and from Abu al-Rabi' and Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Wasil the freed slave of Abu Uyaynah, from Bashshar ibn Abi Sayf, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Iyad ibn Ghutayf, from Abu Ubaydah with this hadith. Sulaym ibn Amir also narrated that Ghudayf ibn al-Harith narrated to them from Abu Ubaydah who said: Sickness expiates sins. Al-Bukhari said: The correct name is Ghudayf ibn al-Harith al-Shami.
