English Translation
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, a man fights out of bravery, another fights out of tribal zeal, and another fights to show off — which of these is in the cause of Allah? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever fights so that the word of Allah is supreme — he is in the cause of Allah. And Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, from Uthman ibn Umar al-Dabbi, from Ibn Kathir, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — and he mentioned a similar narration. Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih from Muhammad ibn Kathir, and Muslim narrated it from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and others from Abu Mu'awiyah.
