English Translation
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd, from Ubayd ibn Sharik, from Abd al-Wahhab ibn Najdah, from Utbah, from Ibn Thawban, from his father, tracing it back to Makhul, to Ibn Ghanm al-Ash'ari, that Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Indeed Allah the Almighty has said: Whoever sets out in the cause of Allah, seeking His face, believing in His promise, and having faith in His messages — he is guaranteed by Allah. Either Allah takes him in the army by whatever death He wills and admits him to Paradise, or he travels under the guarantee of Allah however long his absence may be, then He returns him to his family safely with whatever reward and spoils he attained. Whoever departs in the cause of Allah and then dies or is killed — he is a martyr. Or if his horse or camel throws him, or a venomous creature stings him, or he dies on his bed by whatever death Allah wills — he is a martyr and Paradise is his.
