أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو السَّكْسَكِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى الْأَمْلُوكِيِّ عَنْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ السُّلَمِيِّ ؓ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ الْقَتْلَى ثَلَاثَةٌ رَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ خَرَجَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فَلَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ فَذَلِكَ الْمُمْتَحَنُ فِي خَيْمَةِ اللهِ تَحْتَ عَرْشِهِ لَا يَفْضُلُهُ النَّبِيُّونَ إِلَّا بِدَرَجَةِ النُّبُوَّةِ وَرَجُلٌ مُؤْمِنٌ فَرِقَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَالْخَطَايَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ فَتِلْكَ مَصْمَصَةٌ تَحُتُّ ذُنُوبَهُ وَخَطَايَاهُ إِنَّ السَّيْفَ مَحَّاءٌ لِلْخَطَايَا وَقِيلَ لَهُ ادْخُلْ مِنْ أِيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ الثَّمَانِيَةِ شِئْتَ فَإِنَّهَا ثَمَانِيَةُ أَبْوَابٍ وَلِجَهَنَّمَ سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ بَعْضُهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ بَعْضٍ يَعْنِي أَبْوَابَ الْجَنَّةِ وَرَجُلٌ مُنَافِقٌ خَرَجَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ فَذَاكَ فِي النَّارِ إِنَّ السَّيْفَ لَا يَمْحُو النِّفَاقَ
English Translation
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Furak informed us, from Abdullah ibn Ja'far, from Yunus ibn Habib, from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, from Safwan ibn Amr al-Saksaki, from Abu al-Muthanna al-Amluki, from Utbah ibn Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of the Prophet, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The slain are of three types: A believing man who goes out with his life and wealth, meets the enemy, and fights until he is killed — that is the tested one in the tent of Allah beneath His Throne; the Prophets do not surpass him except by the degree of prophethood. A believing man who is fearful of his sins and transgressions, meets the enemy, and fights until he is killed — that is a cleansing that wipes away his sins and transgressions, for indeed the sword is an eraser of sins; and it is said to him: Enter from whichever of the eight gates of Paradise you wish, for they are eight gates, and Hellfire has seven gates, some better than others — meaning the gates of Paradise. And a hypocrite who goes out with his life and wealth and fights until he is killed — that one is in the Fire, for indeed the sword does not erase hypocrisy.
