English Translation

Abu Tahir al-Faqih informed us, from Hajib ibn Ahmad ibn Sufyan al-Tusi, from Abd al-Rahim ibn Munib, from Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid; and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ishaq by dictation, from Ahmad ibn Salamah, from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, from Jarir, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: They said: O Messenger of Allah, tell us what equals jihad in the cause of Allah. He said: You cannot do it. We said: Yes we can. He said: You cannot do it. He said: I do not know whether it was in the third or fourth time: The likeness of the warrior in the cause of Allah is like one who fasts and prays constantly, devoted to the verses of Allah, never tiring from prayer or fasting until the warrior returns to his family.
