أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ الْعَدْلُ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ الرَّزَّازُ ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ السُّكَّرِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ ؓ يَقُولُ كُنْتُ فِي الْقَوْمِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَامَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّهَا وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَامَتْ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَامَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا ثُمَّ قَامَتِ الثَّالِثَةُ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ فَطَلَبَ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ شَيْئًا قَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِهِمَا سَوَاءٌ
English Translation
Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was among the people in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him) when a woman stood up and said: 'She has offered herself to you, so decide regarding her.' A man from the people stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me.' He did not respond. Then she stood again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself to you, so decide regarding her.' The man stood again and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me.' Then she stood a third time, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: 'Do you have anything?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Go and search.' He went and searched but found nothing. He said: 'Go and search, even if it be an iron ring.' He went and searched and said: 'I found nothing.' He said: 'Do you know anything of the Quran?' He said: 'Yes, such and such surahs.' He said: 'Go, I have married her to you for what you have of the Quran.' The wording of both narrations is the same.
