English Translation
A man came to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was in the mosque at Mina and asked him about letting the end of the turban hang down. Ibn Umar said: "I shall tell you about it with knowledge, if Allah wills. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent an expedition and appointed Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf as its commander, and tied a banner for him, saying: 'Take it in the name of Allah and with His blessing.' Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was wearing a turban of dyed black cotton. The Messenger of Allah called him, unwound his turban, then wrapped it around his head with his own hands, leaving about four fingers' width hanging, and said: 'Wrap your turban like this, for it is better and more beautiful.'" Uthman ibn Ata' is not strong in narration.
