English Translation
Hajjaj told us: Layth told us: Uqayl told us, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurairah, that whenever a deceased man who had debts was brought to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, he would ask, "Did he leave anything to settle it?" If they said, "Yes, he left enough to cover it," he would pray over him; otherwise he would say to the Muslims, "Pray over your companion." Then, when God granted him victories and conquests, he stood up and said, "I am closer to the believers than their own selves. So whoever among the believers dies and leaves behind a debt, its repayment is upon me, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it belongs to his heirs."
