وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ لَمَّا فُتِحَتْ خَيْبَرُ أُهْدِيَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَاةٌ فِيهَا سُمٌّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اجْمَعُوا لِي مَنْ كَانَ هَاهُنَا مِنْ الْيَهُودِ فَجَمَعُوا لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي سَائِلُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْهُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَبُوكُمْ قَالُوا أَبُونَا فُلَانٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَذَبْتُمْ أَبُوكُمْ فُلَانٌ قَالُوا صَدَقْتَ وَبَرَرْتَ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَأَلْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَإِنْ كَذَبْنَاكَ عَرَفْتَ كَذِبَنَا كَمَا عَرَفْتَهُ فِي أَبِينَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَهْلُ النَّارِ قَالُوا نَكُونُ فِيهَا يَسِيرًا ثُمَّ تَخْلُفُونَنَا فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا نَخْلُفُكُمْ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَأَلْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَقَالَ هَلْ جَعَلْتُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الشَّاةِ سُمًّا قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَمَا حَمَلَكُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ قَالُوا أَرَدْنَا إِنْ كُنْتَ كَاذِبًا نَسْتَرِيحُ مِنْكَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ نَبِيًّا لَمْ تَضُرَّكَ.
English Translation
And with his chain of narration, from Abu Hurairah, who said: When Khaybar was conquered, a sheep containing poison was presented as a gift to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Gather for me whoever of the Jews is here." So they gathered for him. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them, "I am going to ask you about something; will you tell me the truth about it?" They said, "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them, "Who is your father?" They said, "Our father is so-and-so." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "You have lied; your father is so-and-so." They said, "You have spoken the truth and been righteous." He said to them, "Will you tell me the truth about something I ask you?" They said, "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim, and even if we lied to you, you would recognize our lie just as you recognized it concerning our father." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Who are the people of the Fire?" They said, "We will be in it for a short time, then you will succeed us in it." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them, "We will never succeed you in it." Then he said to them, "Will you tell me the truth about something I ask you?" They said, "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim." He said, "Have you put poison in this sheep?" They said, "Yes." He said, "What made you do that?" They said, "We wanted that if you were a liar, we would be rid of you, and if you were a prophet, it would not harm you."
