حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ شَقِيقٍ كَانَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَنْهَى عَنْ الْمُتْعَةِ وَعَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَأْمُرُ بِهَا فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِعَلِيٍّ إِنَّكَ كَذَا وَكَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا قَدْ تَمَتَّعْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَجَلْ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا خَائِفِينَ.
English Translation
`Abdullah bin Shaqeeq said. `Hadrat Uthman (may Allah be well pleased with him) forbade tamattu` and `Hadrat Ali (may Allah be well pleased with him) enjoined it. Hadrat 'Uthman said to ‘Ali: You do such and such. Then Hadrat 'Ali (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: You know that we did tamattu` with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). said: Yes, but we were afraid.
