حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَيَّانَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مِينَاءَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ قَالَ أَبِي و حَدَّثَنَاه عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مِينَاءَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ فَلَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا وَلِعَيْنِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا وَلِزَوْجِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا صُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ فَذَلِكَ صَوْمُ الدَّهْرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ بِي قُوَّةً قَالَ صُمْ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ صُمْ يَوْمًا وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا قَالَ فَكَانَ ابْنُ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ أَخَذْتُ بِالرُّخْصَةِ و قَالَ عَفَّانُ وَبَهْزٌ إِنِّي أَجِدُ بِي قُوَّةً.
English Translation
Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Salim - meaning Ibn Hayyan - narrated from Sa'id ibn Mina who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Amr say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "I have been informed that you" - my father said: Affan narrated to us, Salim ibn Hayyan narrated, Sa'id ibn Mina narrated, I heard Abdullah ibn Amr say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "I have been informed that you fast all day and stand in prayer all night. Do not do that, for your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, and your wife has a right over you. Fast three days of every month, for that is the fasting of a lifetime." He said: I said: "I have strength for more." He said: "Then fast the fast of Dawud (David) - fast one day and break your fast one day." Abdullah ibn Amr used to say: "Would that I had taken the easier option." Affan and Bahz said: "I find that I have strength."
