English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ubayd told us: Ubaydullah told us, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar: that Umar saw a silk-striped cloak being sold at the door of the mosque, and said: O Messenger of Allah, why not buy this and wear it on Friday and for the delegations when they come to you? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears this. Then some cloaks of that kind came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he gave Umar one of them. Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, you have clothed me with it, while you said what you said about it? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I did not clothe you with it so that you would wear it; I clothed you with it so that you could sell it or give it as clothing. He said: So Umar gave it as clothing to a brother of his on his mother's side who was a polytheist, in Mecca.
