English Translation
Affan told us, Jarir ibn Hazim told us, who said: I heard Abu Ishaq relating from Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, who said: "We performed Hajj with Ibn Mas'ud during the caliphate of Uthman. When we stood at Arafah, and when the sun set, Ibn Mas'ud said: 'If the Commander of the Faithful were to move on now, he would have done right.'" He said: "I do not know whether Ibn Mas'ud's words were quicker, or Uthman's moving on." He said: "So the people hastened, and Ibn Mas'ud did not exceed a moderate trotting pace, until we all arrived together. Ibn Mas'ud led us in the Maghrib prayer, then called for his supper and ate it, then stood and prayed the last Isha prayer, then slept until the first light of dawn appeared, then he got up and prayed the morning prayer." He said: "I said to him: 'You did not use to pray this prayer at this hour' - and he used to pray it when there was clear daylight. He said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on this day and in this place, praying at this hour.'"
